The first Porsche 901 rolled off the assembly line on 14 September 1964: it was the car with chassis number 300.007. The first vehicles were either temporarily retained by the factory or used as exhibition vehicles. Interestingly, the nine-eleven with chassis number 300.001, a 911 Coup\u00e9 in signal red, was not completed until 17 September 1964. <\/p>\n\n

The first vehicles in the pilot series were assembled step by step. In some cases, components from suppliers had not yet arrived, while in other vehicles individual aspects still had to be improved: this was a completely normal process in the run-up to the start of series production in the 1960s. For this reason, the vehicle numbers are not in chronological order. The date of delivery takes precedence and determines the sequence. <\/p>\n\n

The Porsche 911 was still being produced internally as the Type 901 until 5 November 1964, and the sales brochure, which was printed in August 1963, also presented the new Porsche as the Type 901. A total of 82 vehicles were built under this designation. It was not until 10 November that the 901 suffix was dropped, as it had been vetoed by French automaker Peugeot. In its veto, Peugeot referred to its exclusive right to use three-digit numbers with a zero in the middle, at least on the French market. For this reason, the decision was made in Zuffenhausen at short notice to introduce the new Porsche as the Type 911 in all markets across the world. And so, on 10 November 1964, the number was changed from 901 to 911. <\/p>\n\n

A total of 82 vehicles were produced in series production under the designation 901. These zero-series vehicles rolled off the assembly line alongside the Porsche 356. <\/p>\n\n

The first Porsche with the new and final \u201c911\u201d designation bore chassis number 49. So, it should in fact have been a 901. However, since it was not completed until 10 November 1964, it was the first vehicle to bear the number 911. The last Porsche to be completed under the 901 designation was not number 82, but number 79. <\/p>\n\n

The cars from model year 1965, which were produced between September 14, 1964 and July 30, 1965, are identical vehicles. They differ only in the type designation 901 or 911. <\/p>\n
