In February 1991, Porsche announced a true sensation to the press: the new 964 RS. The rightful successor to the legendary 1973 Carrera RS was scheduled for launch in the summer of 1991.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 964 RS was exactly the car Porsche enthusiasts had been waiting for: a stripped-down 911 featuring a more powerful engine and a race-derived suspension. With its exceptionally low weight, the 964 RS captivated drivers through even greater agility, outstanding performance, and an intoxicating engine sound that quickly became addictive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weighing just 1,220 kilograms, the Carrera RS sprinted from 0 to 100 km\/h in only 5.3 seconds. Producing 260 hp at 6,100 rpm, the 964 RS reached a top speed of 260 km\/h in 1991. Just two years earlier, such performance figures were reserved for the 911 (930) Turbo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only a few weeks after its official announcement, the limited production run of the 964 RS was already sold out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The driving force behind this ultimate 911 was Roland Kussmaul. Together with his team in Porsche\u2019s Motorsport Department in Weissach, he first developed the 964 Cup car for the Porsche Carrera Cup and, shortly thereafter, the new 964 Carrera RS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To celebrate the 35th anniversary of this iconic sports car, Berlin Motor Books is releasing the limited “Kussmaul K47” Edition<\/strong>, restricted to just 260 copies\u2014260<\/strong>, matching the horsepower of the 964 Carrera RS. Every book is individually numbered and personally signed by Roland Kussmaul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cover features Roland Kussmaul\u2019s 964 K47\u2014the original prototype and the forefather of every 964 Carrera RS. To this day, Roland Kussmaul still owns this historic development vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A total of 1,916 examples of the 964 Carrera RS were produced in standard specification. An additional 76 cars were built as the Touring version, designated M002<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Porsche took things even further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1993, the company introduced the next evolution of the 964 Carrera RS: the 964 Carrera RS 3.8<\/strong>. Widely regarded as one of the most extraordinary 911s ever built, it combined the elegant lines of the 964 Coup\u00e9 with the dramatic Turbo bodywork, creating a truly spectacular appearance. Paired with ultra-wide polished Speedline wheels and its unmistakably aggressive rear wing, the RS 3.8 became one of the most charismatic Porsches of all time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While its performance was impossible to ignore, every detail of the RS 3.8 reflected careful engineering and timeless design. Only 55 examples<\/strong> were ever produced, making each one a highly sought-after collector\u2019s car. Today, whenever one of these exceptionally rare automobiles appears on the market, it typically commands a seven-figure price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alongside the road-going 964 Carrera RS 3.8, Porsche\u2019s Motorsport Department in Weissach also developed a dedicated competition car for international racing. The Carrera RS 3.6, introduced in 1991, had not been designed to meet the regulations for endurance racing and was therefore not ideally suited for that purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two years later, Porsche provided its customer racing teams with a far more competitive machine: the 911 RSR 3.8<\/strong>. Depending on the regulations and the mandatory air restrictor, its 3.8-liter engine produced up to 350 hp at 6,900 rpm<\/strong>. A total of 50 examples<\/strong> of the 964 RSR 3.8 were built by Porsche\u2019s Motorsport Department in Weissach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To mark the 35th anniversary of the 964 Carrera RS, the “Kussmaul K47” Edition<\/strong> includes a special section covering every Carrera RS model of the 964 generation, as well as a dedicated chapter exploring the Porsche 964’s motorsport history.<\/p>\n\n\n
