Roland Kussmaul worked at Porsche for more than 36 years
Roland Kussmaul became world-renowned as a legendary Porsche racing engineer. He began his career at Porsche in 1969 as a design engineer before moving to the vehicle testing department in 1973. At the request of Peter Falk, Roland Kussmaul joined Porsche’s racing department in 1977.
The Porsche 964 Carrera RS celebrates its 35th anniversary in 2026
The second generation of the legendary Carrera RS, following the original 1973 model, was announced for the summer of 1991. The new RS was based on the Porsche 911 Carrera 2 (964 generation) used in the Carrera Cup. Even the first press photographs highlighted the car’s striking appearance, featuring larger and wider 17-inch Cup-design wheels, a lowered sports suspension, and aerodynamically optimized exterior mirrors.
Roland Kussmaul is regarded as the “father” of the 964 RS.
From 1989 onward, Roland Kussmaul was responsible for the development of the Porsche 964 Cup race car. Following the success of the 964 Cup, Kussmaul and the Porsche racing department in Weissach-Flacht went on to develop the fascinating 964 RS. Testing and development of the 964 RS were carried out using the prototype known as “K47.” In 1993, Roland Kussmaul was able to acquire this very first 964 RS prototype and has owned the vehicle ever since.
The “KUSSMAUL K47” Edition – A tribute to Roland Kussmaul
In the special edition “Porsche 964 / KUSSMAUL K47,” Roland Kussmaul dedicates an entire chapter to the development of the first modern-era Carrera RS. In an in-depth interview, he also explains why there was such a long gap between the original Carrera RS of 1972 and the introduction of the 964 RS. To mark the 35th anniversary of this icon, the “KUSSMAUL K47” edition includes a special section covering all Carrera RS models of the 964 generation. 448 pages. ISBN 978-3-9814592-4-1.
