Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 – Buying advice & price development

Porsch

The motorsport legend that is the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 is one of the most sought-after sports cars ever! Due to its dynamics and very limited production run, the Porsche Carrera RS 2.7 has always been in extremely high demand. The Carrera RS is even considered the most sought-after 911 among the air-cooled classics from Zuffenhausen. As a high-performance model and style icon, it is part of the automotive silverware of any car collection.

There are only 200 vehicles of the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 in the sports version M471

If you are interested in a Carrera RS, the first question that arises is which version will make your short list. In its lightweight and hyper-spartan sports version, code name M471, only 200 specimens of the first 911 RS were ever made. These extremely rare specimens start at around € 800,000.

The Carrera RS 2.7 in the M472 Touring version is the perfect choice!

When it comes to the somewhat more comfortably equipped Touring version, the M472, which weighs almost 115 kg more, exactly 1,208 specimens had been built by the summer of 1973. This Touring version of the RS 2.7 would be the right choice for most interested parties, because it is the most abundantly available variant and can theoretically even be used daily.

A traceable history is extremely important!

Unfortunately, especially with the Carrera RS, the authenticity of the entire vehicle must be checked by a specialist. The typical Fuchs rims, the ducktail and the front spoiler are available to buy for retrofitting. The widened RS body went on to form the basis for all the 911 SC and Carrera models in the G range.

Since all the vehicle identity numbers are known along with the associated engine and transmission numbers, there have been counterfeits a-plenty in the past and numerous court proceedings. It is therefore particularly important to find a vehicle with a clearly verifiable history. Ideally, the prospective purchase will not have sat around in a garage for years on end.

Unfortunately, this amazing driving machine is far too often to be found sitting unused for years in the collections of wealthy Porsche lovers or investors, making it particularly vulnerable to deterioration through disuse. As a rule, however, Porsche enthusiasts will know that a Carrera RS also wants to be driven.

Now that almost 50 years have gone by, it is almost impossible to find an RS 2.7 in its original condition. Most vehicles have been restored more than once and usually come with a reconditioned body. In the case of vehicles that have previously been restored, it’s well worth obtaining the complete documentation, thus gaining an insight into the quality of the restoration.

Price development of the Carrera RS 2.7 on the upswing again!

The 911 Carrera RS 2.7 is also characterised by extreme leaps in price: just 15 years ago it was possible to pick up good specimens for between € 60,000 and € 80,000. But those days are definitely over. Since 2015, the RS 2.7 has cracked the € 500,000 mark. In 2022, cars with a full service history and in very good condition are fetching prices of around € 600,000.

The most desirable air-cooled nine-eleven can be a sensible investment!

If you are in the position to invest about half a million euros in your hobby or to add to your collection, you should take a very close look at the most sought-after 911 among the air-cooled series. Thanks to its dynamics, beautiful design and very limited production run, the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring is the collector’s piece par excellence. The first 500 specimens from the original series are particularly sought after. If you find a good specimen with a full service history, you won’t go far wrong at the current somewhat depressed prices.

However, the car should not gather dust in the garage after purchase: it should be driven regularly. Due to the superior quality of Porsche sports cars, a Carrera RS 2.7 can also be used daily, at least theoretically. Various classic events in summer and autumn are ideal occasions for suitable excursions.

There will always be a high demand for the few original RS 2.7. The current price has the potential to double again within the next ten years. But even leaving aside economic considerations, it will always be a very special experience to have an original Carrera RS 2.7 in your own collection.
