The Start
The beautiful weather delights the many onlookers a few minutes before the race. Among them is Hans Mezger, who designed the engines for the Porsche 907 with his team and is taking this unique photo. The cars line up in the pit lane for the start. Right at the front on pole position is the Ford GT40 from J.W. Automotive Engineering with the starting number 8 of Jacky Ickx/Brian Redman.
Right next to it is the second Ford GT40 of Paul Hawkins/ David Hobbs with the starting number 9. In the second and third rows of the grid are the four Porsche 907 longtails with 2.2 liter engines. The works team with Gerhard Mitter and Rolf Stommelen will take part in the race with starting number 53. Jo Siffert/Hans Herrmann, who finished second, will start with the number 52. The eventual winners Vic Elford, Jochen Neerpasch, Rolf Stommelen and Hans Herrmann drive with starting number 54.
Jo Schlesser and Joe Buzzetta, who came third at the end of the race, drove the number 51 car, followed by the Howmet TX Continental with Ray Heppenstall/Ed Lowther/Dick Thompson and the aged winner of the 1965 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Ferrari 250 LM of the North American Racing Team with David Piper/Masten Gregory.
The factory Alfa Romeo T33/2 of Udo Schütz/ Nino Vaccarella and the Ferrari Dino 206 S of Pedro Rodriguez/ Charlie Kolb followed in 9th and 10th place on the grid, ahead of the other Alfa Romeo T33/2 of Mario Andretti/ Lucien Binachi and the Porsche 907 LH of Squadra Tartaruga with Rico Steinemann/ Dieter Spoerry.
