Training
The 24 Hours of Daytona took place on 03 and 04 February 1968.
Ferrari had won the international championship for sports prototypes in 1967 by a wafer-thin margin ahead of Porsche.
The Porsche 907 is significantly improved for the 1968 one-make world championship. Hans Mezger and his team are responsible for the engines and increase the size of the eight-cylinder engine from 2.0 to 2.2 litres. For the season opener in Daytona, the 907 gets a long tail. With this body variant, the drag coefficient drops to just 0.27 and the 907 now achieves a top speed of up to 300 km/h with 270 hp.
Hans Mezger is part of the Porsche team at Daytona 1968 and captures a series of unique moments. During training, he photographs the Schlesser/Buzzetta works Porsche. This is waiting to be used. The car will later take 3rd place in the race. Next to this Porsche 907 with starting number 51 you can recognise Helmuth Bott in conversation with Rico Steinemann and behind the pit wall is Peter Falk.
The photographs from the Hans Mezger archive are particularly interesting for lovers of classic cars and historic motorsport.
